beer pairing

Craft beer and cheese pairing? Plus chocolate? Yes, please.

What’s not to love? We’ve got a delightful event coming up that we just know you’ll enjoy. We’re partnering with Lost Province, Cheney Brothers, and Boone Chocolat to bring you a one of a kind craft beer, cheese, and chocolate pairing experience. This event takes place on Monday, March 2nd from 6-9pm in our lounge. We’ll be offering 6 different pairings, and the brewers, cheesemonger, and chocolatier will all have a chance to speak about their products. Read this post to learn how to get the most out of your experience at our craft beer, cheese, and chocolate pairing event. Looking to host your own private home tasting? Trying to impress your sweetheart, or just want to have a fun night with family and friends? Well, read on to learn some food and drink pairing basics, too.

Get the most out of your tasting experience…

Never been to a food and drink pairing event before? Here are a few basic tips that will make you feel like a seasoned pro. First things first, examine the food and drink separately. Listen to the speakers as they describe key tasting points. Make sure to try the beverage by itself and the food by itself. Take small bites and sips. Savor the flavor, slow down, and really tune in to what you’re experiencing. You’ll be surprised at what you might notice. In our western culture, we’re so used to a fast dining and drinking experience. When you really slow down and experience the food and drink, that’s when the magic happens. After trying the food and drink separately, make sure to try them together. See if, or how, that changes the experience.

….a trifecta of perfection.

I’m sure you’ve heard of wine and cheese pairings, but here’s why we’re a big fan of craft beer, cheese, and chocolate pairings. There’s a lot going on in the world of craft beer. Some would even argue that there’s a lot more going on in the beer world than the wine world (I would agree). Independent brewers are known for controlling the quality of their ingredients, doing some really fun experimental things, and making some amazingly clean classics.

Craft beer, cheese, and chocolate is a trifecta of perfection for several reasons. First off, beer and cheese have similar taste profiles. Think herbal notes, hints of caramel, grassy vibes, and a warm toastiness. When pairing beer and cheese, make sure you pair flavors that can stand up to one another. My favorite rule of thumb: big cheeses need big beers, and lighter cheeses need lighter beers. When it comes to chocolate, the rule is similar. Keep your lighter chocolates with your lighter beers. For example, try a pale ale with a milk chocolate, or a wheat beer with an orange chocolate. My personal favorite: Lost Province’s hazy New England Style IPA, Hipster Juice, paired with sweet and spicy chocolate. So. Good.

Don’t be afraid to contrast some flavors and experiment, too. Just make sure that you’re cleansing your palate in between tastings. I advise sipping on water between pairings.
