3 Winter Skincare Tips

How to take care of your skin when you travel!

We know a thing or two about cold winter weather here in Boone, North Carolina. To be honest, I really enjoy our cold winters. I love bundling up, getting cozy by a fire, and taking long winter hikes. Let’s not forget the countless, beautiful winter sunrises that turn the mountains fiery orange, pink, and gold either. Even though I enjoy the winter season, the cold air can be tough on my skin. I’m happy to say that we’ve chosen some excellent bath, body, & skin products for The Horton Hotel & Rooftop Lounge that will leave you feeling hydrated even on the driest of days. It’s important to maintain your regular skin care routine when you travel, yet it’s also important to be mindful about the elements you might encounter in a new place. Read on for 3 winter skincare tips that are sure to help keep your skin balanced when you travel.

Tip 1 It’s a no brainer: hydrate.

Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Both caffeine and alcohol can dry out your skin, and when you travel you’re likely indulging in both (probably a little more than usual, too). For every glass of wine or cup of coffee, make sure you’re drinking a glass of water, or herbal tea. At the Horton we have a wonderful selection of Adagio artisan teas. We’re particularly excited about offering rooibos tea. Rooibos naturally contains hydroxy acid, which is one of the main ingredients in many skin treatments!

Tip 2 Brace for the wind chill in Boone, NC.

If you’re traveling to Boone, chances are it’s going to be about 20 degrees cooler than where you’re coming from. That’s not counting the wind chill. Just be prepared, and pack lots of layers, scarves, hats, and gloves to keep the cold air off your skin. In each room we have body lotion (and moisturizing bar soap) made locally at Valle Crucis Lavender House. Madelynn is committed to sustainability, and she only uses the highest quality ingredients in her products. If you forget your gloves, like I always do, this lotion will work wonders for dry hands. We kept a bottle or two around our office all winter, and it always leaves my skin feeling silky smooth. Don’t skip the lotion in the winter!

Tip 3 Consider essential oils.

Not yet sold on the idea of regularly using essential oils? Well, when you stay with us we have essential oils and diffusers available upon request. After just one use, you might be hooked. Choose from a special selection of custom, hand mixed blends at check in. Our Director of Hotel Operations, Andrea, recommends tea tree oil during cold winter months. She’s a big fan of DoTerra oils, and I’m a big fan of Young Living. Both are great, reputable brands that offer high quality oils. You can’t go wrong with either! Mix a little tea tree oil into your regular moisturizer for an extra dose of hydration. Diffuse one of our signature blends in your room to keep a little extra moisture in the air.

Brave the cold, and meet us at the Horton!
