Let’s face it, Valentine’s Day in 2021 may not be spent in the traditional way. Use this year to try something new, and don’t let the day go by without doing a little something to recognize your loved one…whether its your partner, your best bud, your gal-friend, or even your pup! Love is always worth commemorating, and we’ve put together some perfect ideas to help you celebrate Valentine’s Day in 2021.
Getaway from it all…
February can be a great time to book a staycation or mini vacation. This month’s wintry weather makes it one of the coziest months to getaway with your lover! The High Country offers two one of a kind accommodations for wintry stays. PRO TIP #1: Subscribe to email lists for your favorite boutique hotels so you’re the first to find out about seasonal discounts!

Glamping Unplugged makes for a unique campground Valentine’s Day retreat
GU has created glamorous campsites outfitted with dome tents that are fully equipped with all the necessities you want. You’ll have the campsite to yourself, they come with interior stoves (wood included) to keep you toasty year-round, and comfy bedding
too. Best of all, these domed campsite accommodations encourage an unplugged digital-detox experience like no other. Your sweetie will be thanking you for the much needed one on one time! Visit their instagram to see what all they have to offer @glampingunplugged
PRO TIP #2: Book a night out glamping then follow that up with a night at The Horton for the ultimate Boone Valentines’s Day in 2021 vacay
Get some fresh air…
Might be chilly outside, yes…but bundle up baby we’re chasin icy waterfalls! Frozen waterfalls are a sight to see indeed and very photo worthy. The High Country has so many spectacular falls to discover, and this is a Valentines activity that will literally bring you two closer (to stay warm, of course). Bring the camera along and take the time to capture the beauty of natural winter. Two of my favorite waterfalls to visit year-round include Trashcan Falls and Crabtree Falls.
Trashcan Falls, located on a tributary of the Watauga River, is a place you don’t want to miss, despite it’s interesting name. This 15 foot cascade is clean and pristine, and it’s fairly easy to get to from the parking area. In it’s winter season you’ll uncover breathtaking visuals that are often too hard to take in during the warmer months due to sunning swimmers.
Crabtree Falls is a 70 foot drop with a pool below. Freezing winter temps create an icicle wonderland. Keep in mind this moderate 3.5 mile (roundtrip) hike is the perfect remedy for cabin fever and adventure. PRO TIP #3: Wear layers and be sure to have a waterproof shell as your top layer to keep you dry and warm!
Go for brunch instead of dinner…
Not in the mood this year to have a fancy dinner? Beat the crowd and don’t fuss with reservations, just find a casual brunch spot to toast your loved one with. Nothing says cheers quite like sleeping in and going out for mimosas! The Horton Hotel will be featuring Mimosa Flights on Sunday, February 14th from 12pm till last call at 6pm. Start with traditional orange juice, next up try Appalachian apple cider, then quench your thirst with cranberry, and end with tart pomegranate! Other spots in Western NC I’d suggest for a special mid-morning out include Ransom in Boone and Early Girl Eatery in Asheville.
Grab takeout and leave a little more time to make-out…
Valentine’s Day in 2021 is looking a little different still. So many restaurants still only offering to-go and outdoor seating only in some cases too. Why not order a delicious meal to-go and bring it home where you can set the table with candles. Dim the lights, pull out that wedding china, and dish out your favorite comfort food. PRO TIP #4: If your meal involves French Fries (remember I said indulge in comfort food) use an air-fryer to reheat them to a crispy deliciousness! Plus it makes for a fun gift idea!
Really set the mood at home with the perfect playlist. A few tried and true love songs you’ll want to add to your at-home Valentine’s Day playlist are listed below:
- Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get it On
- Eric Clapton – Wonderful Tonight
- Leon Bridges – Beyond
- Bruno Mars – Just the Way You Are
And plan ahead, there is still time. You can go online and subscribe to a date night or couples-only subscription box. These new subscription boxes are gaining popularity and make the perfect gift idea that lasts for months…keeps the fun going way past Valentine’s Day! Couples are busier than ever and this last year has been hard to go out with so many businesses restricted in various ways. So, use this Valentine’s Day as a way to put a stop to all that. Try DateBox Club for creative date ideas you can do right at home after your takeout dinner. Other unique subscription boxes to consider include Mouth (for those that love to try sweets and treats) and The Sill (a new house plant every month).
Get crafty and do a home project…
So many people got into the world of DIY in 2020 and that trend is not stopping this year. Head to your local hardware store and start that mini reno project you’ve been putting off. Rolling up your sleeves to accomplish something together just feels good. This Valentine’s Day could be the one when you truly start to bond. Plus with President’s Day taking place the day after Valentine’s Day many hardware stores run sales all weekend long for the holiday…so, you may save a little on your project too!
Whatever you decided to do this Valentine’s Day know that you both deserve a pat on the back for making an effort this year. 2020 was rough, and finding ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in 2021 is so important. Make time and take time! To plan a mini getaway at The Horton visit thehorton.com and click the BOOK NOW button to select a romantic room.
