Splish splash: Julian Price Campground for water enthusiasts

campground near boone nc

If you can’t get enough hiking, canoeing, stand-up paddling, fishing or simply floating in a boat with your special person, the Julian Price Campground is the place for you (read: plenty of trails AND a lake). If you’re more of a ‘landlubber’ (hey, it happens) you can hike around the lake and still feel the serenity of the water nearby. Every spring, rhododendrons surrounding the lake burst into bloom in a spectacular array of colors. Make time for the Boone Fork Trail, which runs through the campground and follows a winding river. You can even access Hebron Falls from this trail! Pack a picnic to enjoy after a day spent hiking, spread out on one of the massive boulders, and enjoy the sound of the falls while you eat. Enjoy camping off the Blue Ridge Parkway and set up your tent or camper amidst a stunning backdrop of the North Carolina mountains at Julian Price Campground. (Don’t forget to bring your binoculars! If you’re lucky you may see wild turkeys, deer, hawks, bears and more.)

Your not-so-typical tipi in the woods… do you dare?

Campground boone nc

Instead of traveling to the well-known campgrounds, why not go off the beaten path and try something new? Good thing we found Amber on one of our favorite ‘off grid’ camping websites – Hipcamp.  She offers four incredible places to stay on her land in the Nahimana Forest. The Nahimana Forest is located in the small town of Todd, NC which is roughly 12.5 miles from Boone, NC. The forest is comprised of 10 acres of pristine Appalachian wilderness and has a long history of being used for spiritual retreats. Take your pick from an original tipi, the Buddha Hut, a camp spot, the Soul Cave, or the Labradorite Retreat. The different places offer a variety of amenities, from very basic to pretty comfy, but all come with that peaceful feeling of being deep in the woods. There are trails and creeks all around, there’s a community fire pit, and many animals to spot.
